Taylor Heinicke to start against Texans, Carson Wentz cleared to start throwing

The Washington Commanders will start quarterback Taylor Heinicke this weekend against the Houston Texans with Carson Wentz still working his way back from injury, coach Ron Rivera said.

Rivera said Wentz, who suffered a fractured finger last month in a win over the Chicago Bears, has been medically cleared to start throwing. But the Commanders have yet to designate Wentz to return to practice.

Though Heinicke will start against the Texans, Rivera said that he has not yet decided who will be the team’s starter beyond this week.

Heinicke has led Washington to a 3-1 record in Wentz’s absence.
